This is what happens when you break off a valve head in a turbo Outback...
3 out of 4 is good right?
So much trash
There was no coolant in the cooling system. It either washed the pistons off very well or it is a newish motor. Me and my tech are going with the former since it is a junkyard STI (pretty much same and OBK turbo) motor in it.
And there is the carnage
New 2 piece piston
At least the rings are still there....
Yeah.... Dropped the valve head, split the piston, broke the bore wall, filled the engine with so much debris that it transferred sides through the intake to the opposite side, and basically ruined the engine. Lets just say it wasn’t a cheap estimate.

Several years back my high school bought a FRS with a blown engine. Based on the carnage and the poorly installed factory intake we believe it had some form of forced injection on it when it was blown. Anyway, there wasn’t anything recognizable left of the #3 piston and conrod. Just metal nuggets.

Nice!

Ouch. A co-worker of mine just recently had to replace her 02 Forester because “the motor went” sadly she never bothered to find out what actually went wrong. It had about 180,000 miles so I’m guessing timing belt. She replaced it with a loaded 16 Forester.

Belt or head gaskets if they hadn’t been done yet. Which would honestly surprise me.

I had a datusn that dropped a valve seat. Drove the car about 400 miles before it was puking too much oil out the carb and was getting annoying to drive. Abandoned it in Idaho Falls.

Damn, that sucks.

A Datsun what?

I’ll bet that made one hell of an awful noise before it stopped spinning.

“CUSTOMER STATES VEHICLE STARTED MAKING KNOCKING NOISE AND STOPPED RUNNING”
Quoted from the repair order

So do you suppose the owner continued to drive it in its overheated state, and that’s what allowed all this carnage to happen? Or is there any chance that the thing was borked ever since it was pulled from the junkyard?

I am going to guess that the valve broke, then it grenaded allowing all the coolant to go away.

Hilarious customer comments from work orders are one of the few parts of dealership life I miss.
“Called cust and explained their engine is now a picture perfect display of the phrase ‘catastrophic failure’.”

ouch... (on the upside - once it’s fixed, they won’t have to worry about the head gasket for a while!)

That is awesome! Yeah sometimes we get good ones, but not often.

Huh.... I was ready to be disappointed in you.... but not I don’t know

This is what you bought in the 1990's when you had $600 and needed transportation. The color was what really did it for me. If you are going to have a piece of shit car at least get it in a bright color.

Never have to after the updated ones are installed. They were updated to multilayer ones a long time ago.

Fair enough. I don’t know about the bright color, I mean I agree, but I also loved my $425 E30 318i in white. It was fun till I blew a head gasket.

honestly - do you know when that was switched? I’ve got a neighbor with a 2010 that had problems with the 2.5 motor and a co-worker whose Forester XT transmission just blew up, (the old 4spd auto box.) We got a Crosstrek for my wife with the newer 2.0 last year, (she loves it,) but I’m a little concerned about longevity...

This is what it looks like when your Lemons Ford 2.3 Ranger motor sucks the washer from it’s air cleaner through the carb.

That must’ve made some interesting noises when it happened.

Didn’t those just come out like five years ago?

ask me how i know that the check engine light might not come on after the timing belt slipped and the piston sucker punched the valves on a subaru.
![]() 02/22/2017 at 20:42 |

They did. Someone managed to completely ruin an engine (and the body with horrible mods) in 11,500 mi.

if you’re going to wreck an engine do it properly, like that!

When I worked at a subi dealership, my mgr said to tell anyone inquiring about head gaskets that the issue was fixed two years before whatever year model you were discussing with them...

I bet it does

Well that is a lot of suck!
![]() 02/23/2017 at 10:41 |

It has been over 10 years since they fixed them the first time. They are always updated a little with new part numbers, why we don’t always know, but yeah at least the last 10 years.

I’m reminded of the epsisode of M*A*S*H wherein Col. Potter “mercy kills” his Jeep.

#1 cylinder exhaust valve failure on a turbo Subaru?
shocking haha

first, about a thousand miles post T-belt replacement, the crank pulley bolt slips out while you are driving next to a construction site so the sounds of a bulldozer on pavement coming from your engine bay are thought to be ambient noise (no CEL). Then drive with seemingly normal power down the 25mph street a half mile to work but the noise gets louder instead of fading (no CEL). pull into work and pop the hood and everything looks normal. Restart and realize how fucked the motor is, shut it down and call for a tow.

That is awful.
